WHO ARE WE

About Hessequa Royal Kingdom

An emerging Royal Governance Kingdom of South Africa, rooted in noble heritage and called to dignified leadership.

The Hessequa Royal Kingdom is the contemporary embodiment of an ancient lineage — a sovereign Royal House committed to the dignified restoration, governance, and unity of the Hessequa people within the Republic of South Africa.

We exist to:

  • Preserve culture and heritage, ensuring the continuity of the Khoe-San identity.

  • Provide principled traditional leadership to our communities.

  • Partner with government, civil society, and faith institutions in the long work of restoration and development.

Our authority is rooted in heritage; our conduct in constitutional order; our purpose in the upliftment of every member of the Kingdom.

Re-establishment of the Royal House

The Hessequa Royal House was formally re-established and recognised on 30 November 2013 in Riversdale, affirming the continuity of the ancient kingship of King Goukou. This historic occasion was attended by the Democratic Alliance (DA) political party and Mayor Emor Nel, marking the Kingdom’s return to public recognition within South Africa’s democratic framework.

This re-establishment is not symbolic — it is the restoration of a living succession that was interrupted by colonialism but never abdicated. It affirms the pivotal role of the Hessequa Royal Kingdom in the future of the indigenous Khoe-San peoples, where all “Qua” tribes trace their lineages back to this kingship.
